Potential Top 10 Picks in the 2025 MLB Draft

With the college baseball season now in full swing, along with major and minor league action, it’s time to revisit the 2025 Draft class. MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis initially released his mock draft in December, but the evaluation landscape has changed over the past few months as new information continues to shape the prospects. Now is the perfect time for an updated look at what the first 10 picks might look like.

In the latest episode of the MLB Pipeline Podcast, Callis and Jonathan Mayo took turns selecting their ideal picks for the first 10 Draft slots. It’s important to note that this isn’t a true mock draft based on team needs—rather, it reflects who these experts would pick if given the chance. But it’s a great way to get a sense of how the evaluations have shifted over the past few months, and there might be a few surprises along the way.

High School Players Take Center Stage

As the season progresses, it’s clear that high school talent is heavily represented at the top of the Draft. This highlights how early-season performances can significantly influence Draft rankings, making them diverge from the Top 100 rankings. Below are the top 10 picks, with the players’ rankings from the Top 100 Draft list in parentheses.

1. Nationals – Ethan Holliday, SS/3B, Stillwater HS (OK) (No. 1)
Callis: Ethan is a different player than his brother, more like his father, Matt. He’s physically imposing, and likely prefers third base where his power potential shines. Although he had a slow start to the season after a tough spring, his performance has been improving. There were a few players I considered for this pick, but I’m going with Ethan Holliday as the top choice.

2. Angels – Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona HS (CA) (No. 5)
Mayo: Seth is my top pick here. As a right-handed pitcher from Corona High, he possesses everything you want in a pitcher—size, impressive stuff, and a deep arsenal of pitches, likely including four-plus pitches once fully developed. He also has great command and the competitive edge scouts love. A Southern California scout once told me, “If he’s not being discussed at No. 1, we’re missing the point.”

3. Mariners – Jamie Arnold, LHP, Florida State (No. 3)
Callis: Jamie has the highest floor of the top prospects. While I see more upside with Ethan Holliday and Seth Hernandez, Arnold represents a safe bet. With his plus stuff, solid control, and impressive track record, this is probably the easiest pick of the entire Draft for me.

4. Rockies – Aiva Arquette, 2B/SS, Oregon State (No. 7)
Mayo: Aiva has shown significant power this season, although there’s been some swing-and-miss in his game. His defense has been exceptional, and he’s proven he can handle shortstop. With his power potential and an OPS over 1.000, Aiva is cementing his place in the top five.

5. Cardinals – Marek Houston, SS, Wake Forest (No. 16)
Callis: Marek is arguably the best defensive shortstop in this college class. A legitimate big league shortstop, he has already hit 10 home runs and is slugging .667. With 15 stolen bases in 15 attempts, his offseason work to add strength and change his approach for more power is paying off. Marek offers both defensive reliability and offensive upside.

6. Pirates – Billy Carlson, SS/RHP, Corona HS (CA) (No. 12)
Mayo: Billy might not be universally seen as a Top 10 pick, but his defense at shortstop is elite, with one scout calling him the best amateur defensive shortstop he’s ever seen. He also has a strong arm and can throw mid-90s off the mound. If the bat comes around, his potential is significant, and I’m betting on his defensive ability as a foundation.

7. Marlins – JoJo Parker, SS, Purvis HS (MS) (No. 86)
Callis: JoJo is having a fantastic spring and has always been able to hit. His strength and arm have improved, and he’s showing better speed. His progress this season makes him an exciting prospect with the ability to stick at shortstop.

8. Blue Jays – Kruz Schoolcraft, LHP/1B, Sunset HS (OR) (No. 9)
Mayo: Kruz is an intriguing two-way player with impressive tools both on the mound and at the plate. At 6-8, he offers a powerful fastball, a sharp slider, and a solid changeup. Despite some inconsistency, his potential as a left-handed pitcher outweighs his offensive skills, and I’m picking him as a pitcher for the future.

9. Reds – Brendan Summerhill, OF, Arizona (No. 10)
Callis: Brendan is a solid all-around player, although an injury will sideline him for a month. Before that, he was hitting .409 with six triples and five doubles in 23 games. His ability to control the strike zone and provide consistent offense make him a high-floor prospect.

10. White Sox – Quentin Young, 3B/OF, Oaks Christian HS (CA) (No. 37)
Mayo: Scouts have been impressed with Quentin’s spring performance, showing significant improvements in his swing and defense. He’s a big guy playing shortstop in high school, but his future position likely lies elsewhere. He’s making strong defensive plays and has shown power at the plate, moving himself into the first-round conversation.
